Question: What is the difference between wood mulch & rubber mulch. Have no luck with the wood mulch as it gets full of mold. What about the rubber mulch. What can you suggest? Bonnie – Somewhere in the U.S.
Answer: Hello Bonnie, The main difference is that the wood mulch is organic and if the area stays very wet mold will grow. Rubber mulch is not organic and although some microorganism may live on the surface growing on organic debris that may get into the mulch (like leaves and needles) they wont be feeding on the rubber mulch. So while there is not guarantee that you won’t get any mold you will get substantially less as there will be less “food” available. Mold also depends on dampness. If there is a way to keep the area dryer or get more sun (thinning trees or shrubs to allow more light). Let me know if you have any other questions.
